Deadline for the Not OK Corral: Sept. 15 set in concrete as completion date for new Essex County jaiL

ELIZABETHTOWN In the first post Labor Day Board of Supervisors meeting, the Essex County town supervisors threw down the gauntlet to the contractors who have been working seemingly endlessly on the new Essex County Jail.

If the work is not completed down to the last detail including substandard or just nonworking locks, gates, and gas lines by Sept. 15, the performance bonds for the job will receive a very thorough once over by the board, and appropriate action taken.

The finish date for training corrections officers to work the new facility has been set for Sept. 28.

Board to Buck: Keep on Truckin
In other board news, one of the first pieces of business was a motion from the floor. An emergency request by Superintendent of the Department of Public Works Fred Buck was made for a big ticket item: a new $125,000 triaxle truck. Needed to replace a tandem trailer vehicle that is irreparable, Buck asked for funding for the new hauler. He added that the new heavyweight would not be used for snow plowing.

After some discussion regarding a quick-bid process that would get Essex County the new equipment in a timely fashion, the motion to procure the truck using money from the county's general fund rather than the equipment fund, which could not cover the emergency request was put approved unanimously.
