West Chazy Because everyone deserves a lifetime, thats why there are thousands of people willing to walk 60 miles in 3 days for the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk(s) to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
Of course most every walk participant has their own reason for wanting to accomplish such a feat and thats certainly true of two local women who are part of the DHL Dynamos team.
Annette Ferguson, of West Chazy, walks in honor of her husbands grandmother who died of breast cancer.
She was a wonderful, happy, strong person and this disease took her life, Ferguson said.
Ferguson said she is constantly hearing of more and more families that have been touched by breast cancer and feels if she can help at least one person through her participation in the walk, then it will have been worth every ounce of sweat she put into it.
Kendra Hawksby, of Mooers, walks to honor a special 16-year survivor, her aunt, Shirley Hawksby.
And just recently the two long-time friends and co-workers were told of a mutual friend who discovered a lump in her breast.
They havent gotten all the results back yet, but the doctors are already talking surgery, Ferguson said.
Ferguson and Hawksby will be walking with the DHL Customs Brokerage team in Phoenix, Arizona this November. The team has about 100 walkers in all. And although DHL is their company name, in this case the letters also stand for delivering hope and love.
Individually the teammates must raise at least $2,200. Corporately, the DHL goal is set at $250,000. So far they have raised almost $80,000 and they rank second out of the hundreds of teams walking in the Arizona event. There are also several other cities hosting the 3-day walks for breast cancer.
