Stoves now more efficient

WILTON That red barn on Route 9 next to the Wishing Well in Wilton is now the home to Pine Lake Stoves, a business started in 1991 in Fulton County.

Tim Willard bought the business last year and has now opened a second location in Wilton. Pine Lake Stoves carries a full package of hearth products, with fireplaces and stoves by Enviro, Hearthstone, Lennox and Country.

We can install anything that we sell, Willard said.

Pine Lake Stoves is named for a lake by that name north of Johnstown and Gloversville. Willard said he sells stoves that burn gas, wood, propane or pellets.

Everybodys different, he said. Some want wood and others want gas or pellets.

Business at Pine Lake Stoves is good, and Willard said thats because people in both rural and urban areas are thinking differently about heat.

The price of fuel is high and they want to be more environmentally friendly, he said. Older wood burning stoves are generally about 40 to 50% efficient, but since 1990 the Environmental Protection Agency certifies wood stoves efficiency.

The newer stoves have a secondary burn, he said. They burn the wood and they burn the gases emitted by the burning wood. Not only does this create more heat with less wood, it also eliminates a great deal of the emissions of wood stoves.

All wood stoves on the market since 1990 have a UL listing, meaning they are built to a certain level of efficiency and certified by the EPA.

Willard said that people are also realizing the benefits of space heating.

You heat primarily the area that you spend most of your time, he said. The rest of the house is a little cooler. This method uses less fuel than heating an entire home each time the furnace turns on.

Willard said that heating with stoves has become much more mainstream than it was.

It used to be mostly rural areas that used wood stoves, he said. Now with all the improvements in efficiency and cleanliness, burning wood, gas or pellets is becoming increasingly popular.
