The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) is pleased to announce two special workshops for all dairy producers interested in learning about organic dairying and how to transition to organic milk production. The workshops will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24 at Applecheek Farm in Hyde Park and Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Brattleboro High School's Career Center. They are hosted by NOFA-Vt.'s Dairy and Livestock Technical Assistance Program.
Consumer demand for organic dairy products and markets for organic milk are continuing to expand each year. Organic milk buyers andprocessors will require more organic milk and new organic producers to meet the demand. It is a good time for producers to consider organic production; higher-than-normal conventional milk prices may enable expenses associated with transition to organic production to be better managed.
Workshops will feature presentations by organic dairy producers, regional organic milk buyers, organic grain dealers and NOFA-Vt.'s technical and certification staff. Topics covered will include: USDA certification and transition regulations, organic milk and organic grain market trends, organic production economics, organic herd management and health practices, and value-added processing. Organic product dealers and service providers will be on hand. Books and resource materials from NOFA-Vt.'s library will be available. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The workshops are free to all dairy & livestock farmers. There will be a $15 registration fee for non-farmers and industry representatives.
Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is requested so that there will be enough food.
