Meet the Candidates: Eugene Arsenault

JOHNSBURG Three town residents will square off in a primary on Sept. 18 to see who will represent the Republican Party in the race for two seats on the Johnsburg Town Board Jean Comstock, Frank Morehouse, Jr., and incumbent Town Board member Eugene Arsenault.

The primary winners will represent the Republicans in the November general election in a race that already features Ron Vanselow and Marko Schmale representing the Democratic, Conservative, and newly announced Smart Growth parties.

In this third story of a three-part series, Eugene Arsenault shares his background, views, and reasons for seeking re-election to a seat hes held for 21 years.

Arsenault is a lifelong Johnsburg resident and said he is proud to be part of a community where so many people get involved.

The people here are good, decent, caring people, Arsenault said. Thats at the heart of why I do it. Weve been fortunate that so many have come and gotten involved in government.

He said he thoroughly enjoys working with the town board.

Its pretty humbling, Arsenault said of his tenure on the board. Its an honor and a privilege. I try to keep foremost in my mind that Im representing all the people in the community and we need to do whats best for them and not my own personal preferences.... We can discuss, have a dialogue, reasonably disagree, but come to a consensus.

Arsenault said the town owes a huge debt of gratitude to retiring Town Supervisor Bill Thomas. Arsenault has been on the board during Thomas entire tenure.

Hes very open, very inclusive, Arsenault said. Because of that, so many have felt comfortable to participate. Hes a good listener and he treats everyone with respect. Hes one of the most humble people Ive met. He has a keen interest in those who are the quietest. Hes very sensitive to those. He gave them a seat at the table and valued their contribution.
