Around the county

On Sept. 3 the 48th annual Labor Day Field Day will be held in Mooers with a parade to kick off at 11 a.m. There will be ATV and garden tractor pulls, a horseshoe tournament, and a chicken barbecue at noon. There will be a talent and lip-sync contest at 3 p.m. and lots more things to do.

Northway cell towers raise their heads once again, and with good reason! Our three local politicians, Betty Little, Janet Duprey, and Teresa Sayward are solidly behind getting temporary cell towers in place for the winter on I-87, as is the Northway AAA. It doesnt look like it will happen this year, but these three ladies have worked tirelessly to try to get results.

On Sept. 8 the Cannonball Fun Run will be held as part of the Battle of Plattsburgh celebration. The run begins at 9 a.m. and will include a 5k and 10k, with a cost of $15 and a 1-mile Fun Run for $10. Entries received by Sept. 1 will receive a free T-shirt designed by Sid Couchey. Call Jack Barrette at 563-6286 for further information. We came across Lake Champlain last night on the 9 p.m. boat from Charlotte to Essex and it was a perfectly glorious night. The humidity had left the air, the temperature was warm and the moon was nearly full. A perfect night for being on the water and once more I remembered why I love it here! The Battle of Plattsburgh will be held throughout this week, culminating next weekend. Be watching the newspapers and posters for the schedule of events. There will be a lot happening that week that we should all take part in.

Labor Day weekend always brings back two memories for me. One, the Labor Day Celebration in Port Henry, NY. My grandparents lived in town, and we spent most every Labor Day there watching the parade and the drum-and-bugle performances at Henry Field at the old Port Henry High School. The other memory is of the Jerry Lewis telethon and always calling in to make a donation; we usually had a picnic on that day when our children were young and they most always donated. Good times gone by. School will be starting this coming week. Please drive carefully and watch out for our area students.

Once again, where did the summer go? The leaves are beginning to turn and our thoughts toward apples and baking. As you make the seasonal transition, remember that Each Day is Gods Gift to You. Make it Blossom and Grow into a Thing of Beauty.
