CVU Sports Roundup

HINESBURG -- It was another great week for Champlain Valley Union High School sports, as the football team shutout Mount Abraham and the girls cross country squad earned its fifth consecutive state title. Running game too much for Mount Abraham
The Redhawks gained some momentum going into the playoffs with a brilliant 41-0 victory over Mount Abraham last Saturday. Their overall record stands at 4-5 and the boys are 4-2 in division play. CVU made quick work of Mount Abraham, mounting a 34-0 lead going into halftime. The Eagles didnt convert a single first down in the first half and were repeatedly stopped for losses by a pumped up CVU defensive front. Tailback Tommy Powers led an effective running attack, rushing for 80 yards on nine attempts. Powers also blocked a punt in the first quarter, which defensive end Matt Long gobbled up for a touchdown. Quarterback Derek Liebert slipped by Eagles defenders for a touchdown before halftime. His arm will be well rested for this weekends game, as he did not attempt a single pass in the contest. Fourth seeded CVU heads off to battle Windsor on Saturday. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. Five straight for Lady Redhawks
The CVU girls cross country team added to its lore by clinching an amazing fifth straight title at the Division I State Championship meet in Thetford. Despite losing a number of top runners to graduation last year, CVUs depth proved to be too much for the competition. CVU placed four runners in the top 25, besting Essex by just seven points. Carline Carpenter, Ali Barnes, Maddy Christian, Virginia Farley and Laura Jackson placed 9th, 12th, 13th, 15th, and 24th, respectively. It was CVUs poise in the face of adversity that clinched the meet. Early on, Essex and St. Johnsburys best runners were ahead of CVU, but races are won at the finish line, and the Redhawks made up ground over the course of the race.
