Weather Watch

This September could be enjoyed by almost everyone as there were many days with much sunshine and warmer than normal temperatures, although not record breaking temperature as some may have thought. Perhaps the reason that so many people felt it was a record warm month was the string of six straight days from the 22nd to the 27th when temperatures were in the eighties. The average high was 73.2 degrees and the average low was 46.8 degrees, giving an average temperature of 60.0 degrees, 1.6 degrees greater than normal. This was only the sixth September to average 60 degrees or more. The warmest September was in 2002 when the average temperature was 62.7 degrees. The highest temperature, 89 degrees, was recorded on the 7th and the lowest, 34 degrees, was recorded on the 17th. There were scattered frosts in the area on that date but not here by the Hudson River. The average first frost here in Riparius is September 26th but for the sixth year in a row the first frost will come in October. Precipitation continued below normal with no relief for wells that have gone dry. There was 2.58 inches of rainfall measured, 1.08 inches below normal, with most of that amount, 1.26 inches falling on the 28th. This brings our yearly total to 26.95 inches, 4.07 inches below the normal of 31.02. Measurable rain fell on only 7 days. The river reached its lowest level, 2.02 feet, on the 5th. This is the second lowest level on record. The lowest level was 1.95 feet in September 6, 1999. The river reached its highest level, 2.79 feet, on the 13th.
