Chamber welcomes commitment to Quebec-New York summit

PLATTSBURGH The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce is welcoming a joint commitment by New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and Quebec Premier Jean Charest to conduct a Quebec-New York Economic Summit in Quebec City next year. The event would be the fourth such Economic Summit conducted since 2002, and would be co-organized by the two governments, the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Quebec Chambers. Prior summits have been held in Plattsburgh, Montreal and Albany and are intended to rotate between New York and Quebec every two years. "This represents a firm commitment by the Governor and his administration to the growing economic partnership between Quebec and New York," stated chamber of commerce president Garry Douglas, "and is welcome news for the future of our Quebec-New York Corridor region. The commitment came following a first meeting between Gov. Spitzer and Premier Charest in New York City Oct. 12. The summits are part of the Quebec-New York Corridor Agreement signed by the Plattsburgh-North Country and Quebec chambers of commerce in 2001, followed by a memorandum of understanding between the New York State and Quebec governments in 2002. "This public-private partnership is devoted to broadening and deepening economic collaboration within North America's most exciting new bi-national region, the Quebec-New York Corridor," stated Mr. Douglas.
