Around the county

The population of our town, situated on the shores of Lake Champlain, has decreased decidedly in the last couple of weeks. The true snowbirds have headed out with the Canadian geese for warmer climates. The weather, which has been too warm for this time of year, has turned and is now at a seasonally-correct coolness. That, folks, is my opinion, pure and simple! The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce has announced the recent election of new members to their board. They include David Champagne of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Jonathan Beach of Urgicare, Michelle Menard of Northern Sanitation, Kim Murray of Champlain Valley Electric Supply Company, Brian McBride of Bill McBride Chevrolet/Subaru and Todd Sample of BeeLine Logistics. Having served on that board for several years, I can guarantee you are in for quite a ride and will play a role in shaping the future of our North Country. Enjoy the ride! Congratulations to Chuck Voorhees who aced the 7th hole at The Barracks Golf Course. This was his sixth hole-in-one and was witnessed by Rick Lorey, Larry Brown and Frank Miller. I think the thrill must remain, no matter how many of these are accomplished in ones golfing career. Congratulations to John LaMare who scored a double eagle, which is three under par, on the par 5 12th hole at Adirondack, with witnesses Bobby Dergham and Roger Browne. Congratulations on this rare feat. It wont be too long now before the golf clubs are put away for the season. I know that is a sad day for the true golfer. You know the old joke you know you are a redneck when ... or you know you are a true Adirondacker when ... ? Well, you know summer is officially over when Plattsburgh State hockey tickets go on sale and they are! Call 564-3140 or go to the Angell College Center front desk to purchase them. Has anyone taken a good look at our lake? It is so beautiful this time of year, with the reflection of the leaves on the water. It is so quiet, with not so many power boats churning it up. I guess fall is my favorite time of year. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Arms and Legs Auction will be held at the Strand Theatre at 22 Brinkerhoff St., in downtown Plattsburgh. From 7-9 p.m. there will be activities for young adults, including a haunted log cabin, a hay maze, a fright trail and ghost stories. The cost is $6. I spent a perfectly wonderful weekend in Ottawa with the women in my family. I think I walked at least 100 miles. We shopped, went to the top of the Peace Tower, did the open air market, went to a comedy club a first for me. I enjoyed it, but have to wonder why the language that is used is truly necessary to get a laugh! We also went to a murder mystery dinner theater. As our children grow older as we do times spent with them are a blessing and this was truly one of those! We have done Montreal, Boston and now Ottawa. Plans are in the works for next years trip to New York City, so pennies are already being saved! Enjoy the end of October all of you who need to have Halloween costumes ready are they? I was never a star at that project. It is one I truly dont miss! Until next week, you know the drill!
