UVM Field Hockey

UVM wins with a shutout BURLINGTON Danielle Collins (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice and added an assist while sophomore keeper Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn.) picked up her fourth shutout of the season as the University of Vermont field hockey team defeated New Hampshire 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. With the win the Cats improve to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in America East play. It only took Collins 36 seconds in to the game to give the Catamounts the only goal they would need. Junior Lauren Burke (Mahopac, N.Y.) stole the ball at midfield and sent a long pass into the circle that Collins corralled and notched her first of the day past UNH (7-8, 1-2 America East) goalkeeper Margaux Shute to make it 1-0. Collins gave Vermont a two-goal cushion with 6:03 to go before the half when she tallied her 14th of the year with an assist going to junior Maegan Luce (Hartford, Vt.). Luce put a hard shot on goal that Collins redirected in for the score. Luce now has a team-high eight assists on the year. The Catamounts wrapped up the scoring 2:43 after the intermission when senior Betsy Welsh (Lambertville, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season. Vermont earned a penalty corner and after junior Kim Strieglers (Whitney Point, N.Y.) shot was saved Collins found Welsh, who had started the corner, and she slid it in to make it 3-0. Welsh now has two goals for her career, both coming at home in shut out victories.
