Three days, three authors

SHELBURNE For three days, young and old readers alike can convene in the Loft at the Flying Pig Bookstore, located at the center of the village in Shelburne. Archer Mayor, Catherine Gilbert Murdock, and Judy Schachner will all be visiting the popular bookstore on October 25, 26, and 27, respectively. They are expected to hold autograph sessions and answer questions about their work. Mayor is the author of the highly regarded mystery series featuring Vermont detective Joe Gunther. He has a new novel out entitled Chat, which he will autograph and discuss on the first of the three dates, October 27. New reprints of his earlier books will be available at the store as well. Were really excited that Mayor is visiting the Pig, said co-owner Elizabeth Bluemle. It will be great to celebrate all of these Vermont authors. Mayor is really fun and is a great speaker. Mayors session begins at 7 p.m. All of the events are being held upstairs in the Loft Day two features an appearance by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, who has written two highly acclaimed young adult novels, Dairy Queen and Off Season. Murdock will read excerpts from the ladder and sign copies of her work on October 26. The main character in Off Season, D.J., has reconnected with her best friend and also has developed a relationship with a popular guy. She is still playing football for the Red Bend High School football team and faces several new challenges, both on the field and off. Murdock is so fresh and original, said Bluemle. Kids love it. We are very lucky to have her. Anyone interested in discussing great writing and a fun book should meet in the Loft at 3:30 p.m. to spend some time with Murdock. Refreshments will be served. Rounding out the three day affair is a morning session with Judy Schachner, which begins at 11 a.m. She is expected to read excerpts from her newly released picture book, Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones. The fourth book in Schachners series contains the same energized bump-to-the-beat text and color-drenched illustrations found in all of her works. In 2004, the first book won the inaugural E.B. White Read-A loud Book Award. The Skippyjones books are an international success, added Bluemle. She is so funny and unpredictable and we are delighted to have her join us. The Flying Pig Bookstore features an ever-expanding schedule of events in the upcoming months. In November, there are six young adult authors expected to appear at the same time, and Bluemle also noted that the store is attracting national and international talent on an impressive scale. Were getting even more authors of notoriety, and that makes us very happy, said Bluemle. The events are all free, but those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by calling 802-985-3999. For those who cannot make it to the signings, you may reserve an autographed copy by reserving one at the same number.
