Food drive to assist pantry

PORT HENRY Moriah football fans are being asked to show their school spirit and help out the less-fortunate. Volunteers will be collecting non-perishable items for the Moriah food pantry during upcoming football games at Linney Field in Mineville. Food will be collected during the varsity game against Ticonderoga Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and the junior varsity game against Saranac Oct. 19 at 4:30 p.m. The food drive is the result of a recent article in the Times of Ti detailing shortages at the local food pantry. My daughter, Lauren, and I were reading the article about our local food pantry being in much need of supplies, explained Kelly Cross of Witherbee. She felt very strongly, as did I, that we wanted to do something to help. We came up with the idea of having a food drive. Lauren made a flyer asking for donations that has been distributed at Moriah Elementary School. Also helping is the rest of the Cross family, Brian, Moriahs co-athletic director, and their son, Landon. In reading the article in the Times of Ti about our local food pantry being short of supplies we felt compelled to do something, Kelly Cross said. I suppose it would be fair to say that most of us have no idea what it is like to be hungry and not have the means to feed that hunger. As members of this community we have seen what a small town can do to help our neighbors in need, she added. With your help we can do it again. Sue Morse of the local charity made an appeal for donations during the Sept. 11 Moriah town board meeting. In a letter to trustees, Morse explained 50 families a month are using the food pantry, an increase from past years. That number is expected to increase with the arrival of cold weather, which forces many families to choose between paying for heat or food. Monetary contributions can be mailed to the Moriah Food Pantry, 15 Maple Lane, Mineville 12956. Pantry officials are also now placing collection boxes for non-perishable food items at local businesses and at the town hall at 14 Park Place in Port Henry. People who have questions or who would like to make donations can call Morse at 942-3386 or Diane Redmond at 546-3378.
