Weight-loss surgery improves survival

We all know obesity is associated with a shortened life span, but treatment of obesity with surgery has not been known to prolong life until now. A recent study from Sweden followed patients treated with surgery for obesity for over ten years and compared them with patients who were treated with medications. They found a one-third reduction in total deaths and almost half reduction in heart attacks and cancer for patients treated with surgery. Keep in mind that to qualify for weight-loss surgery you have to have a body mass index greater than forty and suffer from other obesity related ailments. Many facilities also need failure of exercise and diet for one year as qualification. If you are overweight, talk to your physician about this option.
