Sporty's Golf Tournament benefits kids

NEWCOMB Although it was Sept. 22, it felt like the middle of July for the fundraiser golf tournament that was held at Newcombs High Peaks Golf Course.

Despite the hot and humid weather, more than 72 contestants enjoyed the day. It was organized by David and Donna Beale owners of Sportys Iron Duke Saloon in Minerva. The money that was raised went to the Essex County Toys for Kids program and the Robert Dubay Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit Newcomb Central School.

The event was a six person scramble and best ball for 18 holes and got off to a rousing start when George Canon used a shot-gun to start the tournament.

The following awards were presented: First Place- Lorinda Adams Marconi, Paul Adams, Chuck Canon, Doug Bartow and Rick Gervel; Longest Ball- Paul Adams; Closest to the Pin- Brian Warrington; Closest to the Line Craig Wamback; and The Crying Towel award went to Brutus Meehan. Then additional prizes went to the following: John Russell; The Newcomb Team; The Diner Crew; Uncle Buck; and J.R. Pratt for bringing the most people.
