HAPEC fighting the housing crunch in Essex County

The program has been operating since 1997. About two hundred homes have been purchased with assistance from ECHP.

To get the grant, applicants must attend an eight-hour home buyer education program. That requirement leads to a decreased risk of foreclosure, Daniels said. Out of two hundred homes purchased in the last ten years through the program there have been no foreclosures.

Hipps concurred, saying that banks looked more favorably at applicants who had homebuyer education. The programs are held about once a month, in collaboration with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Westport.
