Celestial Drum Tendai Buddhist Sangha meets throughout October

INDIAN LAKE Celestial Drum Tendai Buddhist Sangha, led by Seishin Jack Fitterer, ordained Tendai Buddhist priest, continues to offer the opportunity for practitioners and those interested in investigating practice to come together to study and practice the Buddhas teachings on a ongoing basis.

Throughout October, the Sangha discussions will focus on the role of ritual as a form of meditation and practice, looking into the qualities of inspiration contained within each of the chants of the meditation service that practitioners perform weekly. Many of these provide positive emotional antidotes to common negative mental and emotional states.

The group meets each Thursday evening for discussion of Buddhadharma, chanting, meditation and fellowship. The Buddhas teachings provide roadmaps to Awakening and its manifestation in our daily lives expressing compassion and wisdom.

Meetings, which are open to all, take place in Indian Lake. Introductory instruction in basic meditation will be offered newcomers at 6:15 p.m. Dharma talk and discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. The meditation service, including both chanting and meditation will be from 7 8 p.m. Come for tea, cookies and friendly conversation after the service. Call Jack at 648-6494 or email fitterer@acmenet.net for directions or more information.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, Sangha members have the opportunity to travel to the Tendai Buddhist Institute in Canaan, NY to take part in a one-day kaihogyo, a meditative pilgrimage walk for 12 miles along the rural roads of Canaan. Lunch will be provided and there is a requested donation of $40 for members and $55 for non-members. The group will leave from Indian Lake that day at 4 a.m. and return that evening.
