PLATTSBURGH The Champlain Valley Quilters Guild will host an annual quilt show this Saturday, Oct. 6, and Sunday, Oct. 7, at Bailey Avenue Elementary School, 50 Bailey Ave. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The public is invited to the show to enjoy demonstrations, door prizes, sales, consignment sales, local fabric store vendors and a concession.
Every other year the guild has a quilt exhibition with one of the focuses for the project being the creation of a charity quilt. Area organizations are offered the opportunity to fill out an application to attain the quilt, which is created and hand-quilted by members of the guild. Once the organization has been chosen, it is their responsibility to make and distribute raffle tickets and advertise its existence. The proceeds from the raffle go to the organization.
This year the Senior Citizens Council was chosen to receive the quilt, which was officially presented to them Sept. 12 at the monthly quilt meeting. So far they have sold several hundred raffle tickets and promoted the quilt at several levels. The quilt, which is titled "Pocket Full of Posies," will be on display at the Bailey Avenue quilt show and tickets for the raffle to be drawn Sunday afternoon will still be available.
The Champlain Valley Quilters Guild was founded in 1984 by several women from Plattsburgh and surrounding areas. Sylvia Burgess, Cadyville, one of the women to be honored at this year's showalong with Ursula Myers, Claire Winch and Marguerite Alzina Clark Agnew Prattwas one of the group's charter members.
Since its establishment, the guild has made community service a large part of its purpose. Last year alone, members made more than 165 quilts which were distributed to such places as the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center and the CVPH Medical Dialysis Unit, as well as nursing homes, women's shelters, child abuse and international-aid groups and several fire victims.
