Although Butler does not get the opportunity to showcase her ornithological knowledge and skills in American Machine, she turns in a powerful performance as a Mrs.-Robinson-like woman searching for love (and a new car) in a dreary, downsizing world. Like Judi Dench and Susan Sarandon (two actresses whom she admires), Butler dominates the stage with her strong, direct attitude.
Not surprisingly, Butler expresses an interest in performing in Sweeney Todd, a gritty musical about a mass murderer whose victims remains are baked into pies by his companion, Mrs. Lovett. As Mrs. Lovett, Butler would be able to sing like the birds she loves so much. And she might get some baking done also.
American Machine will be at FlynnSpace Oct. 3-7. Ticket prices range from $20 to $29. For tickets and further info, the Flynn Box Office is at 153 Main St, Burlington, 802-863-5966,
