A perfect autumn activity is a visit to the heart of Rutland County and the 200-acre expanse comprising former Vermont Marble Co. quarrying and manufacturing facility. Within this historic area is todays Vermont Marble Carving Studio and Sculpture Center.
The Green Mountains, as early as the 19th century, were the hub of a thriving international stone quarrying and milling industry.
Vermont marble was shipped around the world for use on buildings, monuments and for sculpture. Many employment opportunities existed in the areas of quarrying, fabricating and carving stone.
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, located in West Rutland, has expanded its programming to include the exploration of most sculptural media.
The former company store of the Vermont Marble Company serves as a center for workshops, lectures, communal dinners and special events.
A unique stone sculpture garden greets the visitors to the center.
Workshop applicants work side-by-side with artisans of all ages and experience. The centers artist-in-residence program encourages the exchange of technical skills and aesthetic viewpoints with sculptors from around the world. One and two person exhibitions in the gallery feature artistic contemporary sculpture.
