Yamato: The Drummers of Japan Bring Pulsing, Electrifying Beats to Burlington

BURLINGTON -- Exuberant, boisterous, and unbelievably energetic, the male and female drummers of Yamato take over the Flynn MainStage with their unbridled enthusiasm and superhuman feats of coordination, acrobatics, and humor in Shin-On (Heartbeat) on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Through their percussive rhythms, Yamato communicates the ancestral belief that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life. With a massive Taiko drum made from a 400-year-old tree as its centerpiece, Shin-On blends thunderous rhythms with Japanese music of delicate beauty, celebrating Japans rich cultural traditions. Join Members of Burlington Taiko for a free pre-performance Lecture about the evolution of taiko in Vermont and North America, including the art form's tremendous positive impact on players of all ages. The lecture will begin in the Flynn Centers Amy E. Tarrant Gallery on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. This performance is presented in association with the Office of the Associate Provost for Multicultural Affairs through the UVM Presidents Initiative for Diversity. The performance is sponsored by IBM and Treeworks, with media support from North Country Public Radio. Yamato is funded in part by the Expeditions Program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, which receives major support from the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the state arts agencies of New England and the Andrew W.
