Prepare to laugh: The Logger rolls into Shelburne

SHELBURNE Celebrated actor, comedian and writer Rusty DeWees will appear at the Flying Pig Bookstore in downtown Shelburne on Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. DeWees, known throughout Vermont and New England as The Logger, will read excerpts from his new book, Scrawlins. The book showcases DeWees talent for combining the hilarious and the heartfelt, written in his trademark conversationalist style. His column, Scrawlins, appears every week in the Times-Sentinel, and fans of his work in this newspaper will certainly be interested in attending the discussion. The book is comprised of essays and stories from DeWees real life as well as his colorful imagination. Famed author and screenwriter John Fusco compares DeWees to Ethan Allen, and says that Scrawlins is a wonderful glimpse into the real lives of Vermonters. This book is a window into the hidden Green Mountain State beyond the ski slopes and changing leaves, says Fusco. And it will leave you with laughter and longing. But Rusty DeWees is more than just a regional treasure, he's an American original. The book includes an introduction by Vermont poet David Budbill and was praised by writer Howard Frank Mosher as a wonderful addition to Vermonts literary heritage. Copies of DeWees comedy videos and musical CDs will be for sale at the event. Although it could not be confirmed at press time, the staff at the Flying Pig Bookstore suspects the Rusty might treat his audience with a few musical selections. In addition to writing a newspaper column, DeWees has also worked in radio and television, and has appeared in 25 films. In the course of his lifetime, he has worked as a paperboy, gas jockey, landscaper, logger, concrete worker, bus driver, coach and musician. Like all events at the Flying Pig, The Logger will entertain guests upstairs in the Flying Pig Loft, the spacious new addition above the bookstore. The Loft is accessible by both stairs and an elevator. Because of DeWees fame, it is expected that the event will fill the space to capacity, and those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP ahead of time. The event is free.
