Bess R. Bruce

PORT HENRY Bess R. Bruce, 89, of Forge Hollow Road, Port Henry, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y. She was born May 11, 1918, in Crown Point, N.Y., the daughter of Ray and Carrie (Woods) Meachem. Bess graduated from Crown Point High School in 1936 and married Bernard M. Bruce, who predeceased her in 1978. She continued to live in Port Henry for more than 70 years, most of it on the Bruce Farm that has been in the family for 100 years. She worked for a variety of families in the area, International Paper Co. and at Johnson's Farms. Bess was a hard worker and always gave 100 percent to everything she did. Bess enjoyed all people and had a youthful spirit, even though she was into her senior years. She liked music, especially country and bluegrass, which was demonstrated by her activity with the Champlain Bluegrass Association. Her friend, Earl "Stub" Clemens played along with his buddies during those fun days and Bess and her girlfriends loved every minute. Bess in her early years was involved with R.S.V.P., Moriah Ambulance Auxiliary, gardening, canning, traveling, keeping up with her grandchildren, collecting baskets ... lots of baskets. As the years went by, somebody forgot to tell her that she could not do certain things; like in her 80's she was still shoveling off her roof, to the neighborhood's dismay, washing sports cars with no more tears baby shampoo, checking on the farmer's calf operation unbeknownst to him and drinking a bottle of beer from time to time. Bess is survived by her son, David V. Bruce of Port Henry; and her daughter, Bernadine M. Gunning and her husband, Michael Gunning, of Crown Point; her sisters, Mary Tubbs of Crown Point and Geraldine Swinton of Schenectady. Additionally, she has a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren including, Scott Munson and his wife, Pam, and daughter Megan of Moriah, Eric Munson and his daughter Brianna of Port Henry, Michael Bruce and his wife, Ana, and their children Briana and Ashley of Miami, Fla., Jennifer Bruce Berie and her husband, Ron, and their children Bryce, Cadon and Kaleigha of Adams, N.Y., and Gregory Bruce of Orlando, Fla.; many nephews and nieces including, Cathy Glebus, Sharon D'Avignon, Tom Tubbs, Sam Meachem, Steve Meachem, Sarah Ryan, Betty Pertak, Joe Meachem, John Meachem, Ricky Meachem, Roger Meachem, Russell Meachem, Ray Meachem, Barbara Armstrong, Carol Cavitt, Robert Bruce and Richard Bruce; her special Aunt, Lily Lang; and her dear sister-in-law, Betty Roberts. She was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth, David and Robert Meachem. Honoring Bess's wishes, there were no calling hours. A Christian burial was held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at the Mount Moriah Presbyterian Church in Port Henry with the Rev. Alice Hobbs officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Port Henry. The family has requested that donations in Bess's memory be made to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad for all of the good work they do for the residents of Moriah.
