SHELBURNE Its a tradition Sample the Season at the Welcome Center and Farm Store at Shelburne Farms a chance to taste the delicious (and award winning) cheddar cheese, talk to the cheesemakers, and place mail orders for gift giving to friends and relatives all over the country and around the world. The mail order and catalog staff will be ready to consult on the choices of cheese, maple syrup, breakfast combinations, and so much more, as well as advising the best time for shipping in time for holiday elivery. Sample the Season will be all day on Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 at 1611 Harbor Rd., in Shelburne. A special treat this year will be the chance to meet and talk with author Melissa Pasanen and Chef Rick Gencarelli of the Inn at Shelburne Farms about their book Cooking with Shelburne Farms: Food and Stories from Vermont. They will be at the Welcome Center from 12 to 1:30 on Friday and 2 to 3:30 on Saturday, signing books and talking about the recipes featuring Vermont food products and the stories of the people who produce the food, included in the book. A special part of the Sample the Season tradition is a horse-drawn hayride and Pat Palmer and his team of handsome Percherons will be at the Welcome Center both days from 11 to 3 to take people for a ride through the nearby fields. The rides are free. Shelburne Farms is an environmental education center, 1,400 working farm and National Historic Landmark. The mission of Shelburne Farms is to cultivate a conservation ethic by teaching and demonstrating the stewardship of natural and agricultural resources.
