Poultney upsets Windsor

The Poultney High School Blue Devils football team astonished the local sports world last Friday night by defeating the top seeded, undefeated Windsor Yellow Jackets 33 - 22 and capturing the Division III State Championship. The game began as everyone expected it to end, as a Windsor blowout. The Yellow Jackets needed just four plays to execute a 91-yard scoring drive. Trevor Varney carried the ball three times for 57 yards. On the fourth play Windsor quarterback James Aldrich dropped back to pass and connected with Bill Gokey for a 34-yard touchdown. Varney then successfully ran in the two-point conversion, and Windsor led 8 - 0 before two minutes had expired off the clock. They increased their lead to 16 - 0 midway through the second quarter when Varney completed another scoring drive with a two-yard run. Aldrich and Gokey then hooked up again successfully, this time on the two-point conversion. The Blue Devils finally got on the scoreboard with 5:46 left in the opening half when quarterback Kurt Hewes threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to freshman John Fairbanks. Owen Teetor nailed the extra-point and cut Windsors lead to nine points 16 - 7. The Yellow Jackets threatened to put the game away before the break when they drove the ball down inside the Poultney one-yard line. But when Varney tried to drive it in on the last play of the half he was wrapped up by Kurtis Petty and Nate Lewis and stopped. That defensive stand seemed to spark the Blue Devils who came out and struck first in the second half. Ryan Davenport completed a third quarter scoring drive with a 15 yard touchdown scamper. However Teetor missed the extra-point, making it 16 - 13. But Windsor answered the Blue Devils six points with six of their own on Varneys second touchdown run of the game and headed into the final quarter the Yellow Jackets held a 22 - 13 lead. But Poultney climbed back into the contest when Hewes and Fairbanks hooked up again, this time from 20 yards out, and when Teetor drilled the extra point Windsors lead was cut to two, 22 - 20 with 7:36 still remaining in the game. Fairbanks then stepped up defensively when he hit Varney, forcing the star running back to fumble and Nick Loomis fell on it giving Poultney the ball back at midfield. Bobby Scott then stepped in temporarily for Hewes, who was suffering from cramps, and drove the Blue Devils down to the two-yard line in just five plays. Hewes then returned and carried it into the end zone. After Teetors third extra-point Poultney led 27 - 22 with 3:50 left to play. But Windsor wasnt through yet. The Yellow Jackets drove from their 31-yard line down to Poultneys 15 with time running out. From there Aldrich dropped back to pass and appeared to have Gavin Callahan all alone in the end zone and he fired, But before the ball got to Callahan Scott came out of nowhere and broke the play up. Two plays later Windsor fumbled again and this time Fairbanks recovered it and raced 83 yards for his third touchdown of the game, completing the upset and securing the Division III State Championship for his Poultney Blue Devils. Varney carried the ball 28 times for 218 yards for Windsor. In addition to his two touchdowns the star back averaged an impressive 7.8 yards per carry. Ricky Ross led the rushing attack for the state champion Blue Devils. Ross rushed for 105 yards on just twenty carries. Windsor completes their season with a 10 - 1 record, and the state champions finish at 8 - 3. The fall state champions have been decided, and there is just one more high school football game left to be played, and that will be plaued this weekend when the Norths best seniors take on the Souths best seniors in the 200 7 Senior Bowl. What does this all mean? Simple, the fall seasons are over and the winter seasons are about to start. High school basketball and hockey teams began practicing Monday for those seasons. So you can make plans to watch your local teams we will provide you with schedules. This week we start with the Rutland Raiders Boys basketball, boys hockey and girls hockey schedules.
