SUNY Plattsburgh students to produce live coverage of Great Northern Shootout

PLATTSBURGH Students at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh have been given an unprecedented opportunity at the college to play a critical role in the airing of this years PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. Members of the SUNY Plattsburgh administration and local telecommunications company Primelink joined together at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Hockey Arena Nov. 1 to announce a partnership that will allow for students to produce live coverage of the upcoming men's Division III college ice hockey tournament. Utilizing PrimeLink technology, coverage will be broadcast over the Internet allowing those unable to attend the event the opportunity to view the game via a live feed. Four senior students from the college's Center for Communication and Journalism will be involved with the production of the tournaments coverage Ashley Gela, producer; Eric Hoffman, play-by play announcer; Sean McCluskey, color analyst; and Colleen Sheehy, between-period host. SUNY Plattsburgh president John Ettling said the opportunity is an ideal marriage of the universitys academic mission and extraordinary athletic program. Everyone here knows Cardinal Hockey is something that is embedded in the history and the tradition of this school, said Mr. Ettling. This will afford an opportunity for our alums and friends around the world to experience Plattsburgh State Hockey. Mr. Ettling credited the partnership to Plattsburgh State alumnus Trent Trahan, chief executive officer of PrimeLink, who has been a friend and supporter of the university since his years serving its foundation board of directors. The tournament has really created a buzz in the hockey world, said Mr. Trahan. Were very proud to be part of that ... In looking at Plattsburgh State and the academic programs we have here, we felt that the communications department would be an excellent match with us, being that our headquarters are in Plattsburgh. This takes the tournament to a higher level, Mr. Trahan added. Certainly this is an opportunity for [the students] to really showcase their skills, said Peter Ensel, director of the Center for Communication and Journalism and chair of the Department of Communication at SUNY Plattsburgh. Being a participant was an opportunity we could not afford to pass by. Aside from the athletic advantage, said Mr. Trahan, it is the hope the partnership will lead to further joint ventures down the road, including Webcasting college lecture series, concerts, commencement exercises and other on-campus events. The PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout, now in its 10th year, will be held Friday, Nov. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 24. This years tournament will feature SUNY Plattsburgh, Middlebury College, Norwich University, and St. John's University of Minnesota.
