Schroon library ships books to troops

SCHROON LAKE Friends of Schroon Lake Public Library are participating in Operation Paperback, a New York Library Association project to send used paperback books to U.S. military bases in Iraq. Dave Pachla, Friends president, said this effort is being made to provide soldiers a respite from the war by providing both fiction and non-fiction used paperback books from donations made by Friends members. Retired Sgt. First Class Tom Goodrow, Schroon Lake resident and participant in both Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, provided the Friends with the address of the First Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Drum that is stationed in Iraq. A box of books should be in the hands of these Fort Drum service personnel in a few weeks. Along with the books, Pachla enclosed a note to soldiers. It reads: Various Friends of public libraries throughout New York are participating in Operation Paperback, a project to send our armed service personnel used paperback books. Enclosed find a selection of fiction and non-fiction paperback books we have received from our members to support this effort. We appreciate your sacrifice and service to our country and hope these books will provide a respite from the war.
