New book takes a different look at Adirondack region

QUEENSBURY Paul Gibaldi has been taking pictures of the beauty of the Adirondacks for years and now he has put together a book of his unique and beautiful photos. Spirit of the Adirondacks will be available soon, and it shows the Adirondacks from Gibaldis perspective. Gibaldi, a licensed Adirondack Guide, is a survivor. In his 20s, with a successful career ahead of him in the New York Metropolitan area, Gibaldi and his sister and brother were involved in a catastrophic car accident in Florida. His brother survived with injuries, his sister died instantly and Gibaldis injuries were so severe, doctors didnt think he would return to a normal life. After a two-month coma, Gibaldi awoke, but with the mental capacity of a 6 year old. Through determination, physical and mental therapy, he made it, a changed man. Gibaldi and his wife, Laura, moved to the Adirondacks where he began learning the nuances of the wilderness and in 1989 he became a licensed Adirondack Guide. My book looks at the Adirondacks from my own perspective, he said. Its a beautiful book. Besides his photos, Gibaldi wrote text for the work as well. Im a deep guy, he said. I have a different way of looking at things. Gibaldi painstakingly went through his collection of pictures from his years of guiding and exploring. Each photo is unpretentious, drawing readers into the reflection of nature during each season of the year. From the smallest frog to the summit of Mount Marcy, Gibaldi captures the spirit of the last great forest of the Northeast in his book. He has captured a bald eagle taking flight, a black bear approaching and a pair of elusive loons guarding their nest. Spirit of the Adirondacks is a hard cover coffee table book that Gibaldi says will be looked through over and over again. He will be at several local venues with his book, signing copies and sharing his experiences.
