Scout Pack 35 holds family cake bake contest

SARANAC The Regional Spelling Bee was not the only competition going on in Saranac on the evening of April 20. A few miles down the road Cub Scout Pack 35 was having their own "sweet competition" at the Saranac Town Hall. It was the Family Cake Bake Pack meeting. Each cub scout created his cake at home with the help of a family member. The cake and all decorations had to be completely edible. The cakes were decorated and judged in the following categories: Judges Choice, Most Scout Like, Sports, Adirondack Life, Mr. Fix It, and Holiday. The event was underway by 7 p.m. with the cakes displayed on tables to one side of the room. A group of excited scouts recited the pledge of allegiance and awards were handed out to the scouts who had completed achievements from their scouting manuals during the preceding month. Then it was time for judges Allen Reece, the Cub Scout Unit Commissioner, and Carson Hynes, Bear Den Chief, to judge the cakes. During the 15 minutes of judging the scouts played team building games in the basement. When the scouts returned upstairs it was time to acknowledge the winners. Finally, it was time to cut and eat the cakes! Ben Hatch, who worked with his Dad to create a cake that depicted the four achievements of cub scouts, expressed the sentiments of the rest. He enjoyed the whole event, but "The best part was eating the cake," he said. The atmosphere throughout the evening was party-like as families celebrated cooperation more than the competition and the process more than the product. All scouts received certificates and a cake bake badge for their vests. The overall winner was declared to be "Camp Jamboree" by Logan Jarvis. Other winners were: Sports: 1st: Jacob Laduc with "Arrow" Honorable Mention: Andrew Rivera with "Snorkeler" Adirondack Life: 1st: Ethan Mangum with "Log Cabin Delight" Honorable Mention: Rafael Rivera with "Bear Camp" Mr. Fix It: 1st: Josh Hatch with "Chocolate Cake" Most Scout Like: 1st: Ben Hatch with "Four Achievements of Cub Scouts" Honorable Mention: Nick Sears with "Tiger Cub" Holiday: 1st: Roland Drollette with "The Snowman" Honorable Mention: Walter Ward with "Rainbow Explosion" Judges Choice Honorable Mentions: Aaron Jarvis with "Day Camp" Tanner Pauquette with "Rainbow Fish" Trey Plummer with "Pack 35 Olympics"
