PERU The Peru Intermediate Schools third grade has enhanced its curriculum thanks to a Best Buy Corporation $2,500 Teach Award. The award has enabled the school to introduce Around the World in 180 Days, a technology that allows students to travel the world via the internet. Students experience the countries being studied through the creation of their own multimedia presentations complete with pictures, music, and narration that can be shared with their classmates, school community and their families. Tracey Howard, a third grade teacher at the Peru Intermediate School, applied for the Best Buy award after learning about it on the Best Buy Web site. "The use of technology engages all the students in the classroom. This project gives students the opportunity to share their knowledge and reach the highest level of understanding, Howard explained. The school used the grant monies to purchase a camcorder, notebook computer and projector. Students are creating multimedia presentations that integrate computer technology, social studies and the language arts. Each countrys video includes a collection of electronic pictures and video clips that incorporate the elements of the cultures being studied (geography, government, economy, people, important places, holidays and traditions). Students also videotape an interview with a person native to the country being researched. SUNY Plattsburgh exchange students from Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and Vietnam recently visited the third grade students and participated in the interviews. Best Buy presented Teach Awards to 1,300 schools across the United States. Paula Prahl, vice president of public affairs for Best Buy, commented, The Teach Award program helps creative educators enhance their curricula. By committing dollars to the communities in which we work and live, we can more fully support our employees, our customers and their families. All accredited, public, and private nonprofit elementary, middle and secondary schools located within 50 miles of a Best Buy store were eligible to apply.
