Ladies' group reaches out to help the community

MOOERS The United Methodist Flames formed last September when the ladies of the church, located in Mooers, suggested a need to get together for fun. Then they took it a step further and asked, What else can we do? They responded by publishing a cookbook called Feed the Flock, filled with recipes contributed by community members. Linda Robinson put it together, said member Cora Smith. She was our coordinator. There is a three-fold plan for dividing up funds raised from cookbook sales. Twenty percent will go to mission work such as helping people in the community who are experiencing hardship due to a fire, illness or loss of job. Examples of what may be provided are gift certificates to various stores, money for gas to go to a job interview, and donations to community fundraisers. Every little bit helps, Robinson said. Another 20 percent will go toward scholarships for local students. Although they havent set the criteria yet, members do know they arent looking for top students. Instead, the focus will be on those who work hard and have always done their best, regardless of their grades. They want to reward a students effort by giving them a little helpful boost. The remaining 60 percent goes into the church fund to help finance projects such as remodeling the kitchen, adding a toddler room, and installing a ramp to make the downstairs Pine Room handicap accessible. The Flames also have a variety of other items for sale including gift baskets, pot holders, and bag holders. Funds raised last year went toward new gloves for the bell choir and new choir gowns. Planning for the Flames next fundraising projecta church calendaris expected to begin in summer. Although the group is made up of members of the Mooers United Methodist family at present, new memberswomen onlyare welcome regardless of faith. An interesting and great strength of the Flames is the diversity of the groupfrom ages 33 to 81! Pastor Al Johnson said. If you like to laugh and have a good time, come, Robinson added. The United Methodist Flames meet once a week on Friday evenings in the Pine Room of Mooers United Methodist Church. For information, call Cora Smith at 236-5874.
