Hague to host dog show

HAGUE Pooch, canine, mutt or best friend. Whatever you call your dog, owners can give him or her a chance to be a star in the Ready to go Doggy Show. On May 26 at the Hague public beach, area dogs will compete in best in show, agility, best trick and costume groups for ribbons and prizes. Lin Benway, owner of Lins Grooming and Boarding in Hague, is hosting the event. Its a family thing, Benway said about the doggy show. Benway has been working with Adirondack-Save-a-Stray for years, helping place animals with area families. Since many of the dogs Adirondack-Save-a-Stray has placed are both pure and mixed bred, shes calling it a doggy show so any kind of four-legged friend from anywhere can participate. The first event, best in show, will be won by the dogs having exceptional spirit, attitude, behavior and personality. For the agility event, dogs will quickly and accurately retrieve tennis balls. In the best trick category, dogs will demonstrate a unique maneuver for the judges. For the costume contest, Benway says, I really encourage people to dress their dogs and themselves. Prizes will be given to the winners of the groups in each of the three size categories. Cost to enter each group is $10. Net proceeds will benefit the Adirondack-Save-a-Stray. Dan Rossignol, a professional dog trainer, will speak at 10:30 a.m., following the 10 a.m. registration. He has worked with Benway and Adirondack-Save-a-Stray to train placed dogs with obedience problems. Following the competition, a representative will speak from the New York State Police K-9 Unit about working dogs and their jobs. So far, Benway has received about 15 applications. She reminds owners that it is important to include a copy of each dogs shot records with the application. Dogs must be on leashes at all times during the event. If the event is a success, Benway hopes to hold it annually. Steve Pelkey from WOKO will provide music at the event. A concert will follow the dog show until the Hague Memorial Day Parade, at 2p.m. Applications for the Ready to go Doggy Show are available at Lins Grooming and Boarding.
