Conservatives back three Democrats

JOHNSBURG The Warren County Conservative Committee has endorsed three candidates for town elected office and none of them are Republicans. The Committee endorsed Andrea McKee for town supervisor and Ron Vanselow and Marko Schmale for town board. All three will likely run on the Democratic line as well. We had a great meeting with them, McKee said. The fiscal nonsense going on in the town of Johnsburg, they are aware of it and concerned about it. McKee said that although she is an independent who has been closely aligned with the Democratic party, she shares some Conservative philosophies. I believe what I believe and I act on it, she said. They seem to agree with me on fiscal policies. Im glad I got the endorsement. McKee is seeking to succeed retiring Town Supervisor Bill Thomas. If successful, shed become only the second Democratic candidate in more than 100 years to serve in that position. The first was Bill Monfort, current Warren County Democratic Chairman who served one two-year term as town supervisor. But McKees likely opponent in the general election, Republican Town Board Member Sterling Goodspeed, said that the endorsement probably has something to do with ill feelings that Carol Birkholz, the Conservative chairwoman, has for him. He noted that the Republican candidates werent invited to meet with the Conservative Committee. An endorsement of the three individuals may be more about how much this person dislikes me because of a former job I held than about any persons candidacy, Goodspeed said. As district attorney I was placed in a position where I had to prosecute a member of her family and I did so fairly and appropriately. But it clearly upset Mrs. Birkholz. Goodspeed said he feels badly about the other Republican candidates who he said were not given an opportunity to present their credentials to the Conservative Committee because of the issues the chairwoman has with Goodspeed. But Birkholz said that the candidates were endorsed because of their Conservative credentials. All the candidates the Conservative Party is endorsing "are in line with the Conservative philosophy," Birkholz told the Glens Falls Post-Star.
