Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau to hold challeng

WILMINGTON The Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau, located in Wilmington, is holding the 8th Annual Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge on Saturday, May 19 on the legendary Ausable Rivers West Branch. Each year this event attracts fishermen from all over the country. The Catch-n-Release challenge will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Contestants will meet at 6:30 a.m. at the TCO/Hungry Trout Fly Shop on Route 86 in Wilmington. The competition will cover a designated section of the Ausable River, accessing a variety of waters and conditions. It will be time-limited fishing using two flies of your choice. Although not a professional contest, the competition will include a pro-division, and prizes will be awarded to winning participants, both amateur and pro. Application fees are $55 for amateurs and $100 for professionals. Children under 16 years old pay $25. The competition is limited to the first 100 applicants. A Continental Breakfast and the Two-Fly Banquet on Saturday are included with the application fee, held at the Hungry Trout Restaurant. A welcome reception will be held on Friday evening, May 18 at R.F. McDougalls at 6 p.m. Guest fly-tyers Bob Mead, Steve Silverio, Joe Soma, Vince Wilcox, Leslie Wrixon, Monty Kennedy and local legend Fran Betters will be on hand for fly-tying demonstrations. After the competition on Saturday, the annual Two-Fly Banquet will be held at the Hungry Trout Restaurant at 6 p.m. Dinner is included for all contestants, and the public is welcome to attend for $25 per person (reservations required). All proceeds from the contest go to the Wild Trout Fund which is dedicated to the Ausable River so it is a worthy cause.
