Green Mountain College president John F. Brennan has announced that U.S. Rep. Martin Meehan, Democrat congressman from Massachusetts, will give the keynote address and receive an honorary degree at the College's 170th Commencement on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. "Congressman Meehan has championed many causes, including global warming, sustainable development and civil rights, that are close to our students' hearts and our mission," said Brennan. "He has represented his constituency and the country with a fierce tenacity that is a service to all American citizens." Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 (Massachusetts 5th congressional district), Congressman Meehan has emerged as a national leader on many issues, including campaign finance reform, protecting children from tobacco, and "smart development" practices. Meehan is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. He is co-chairman of the Sustainable Development Caucus and the Congressional Task Force on Tobacco and Health and is a member of the Democratic Environmental Task Force, Human Rights Caucus, and the Renewable Energy Caucus. He is also an outspoken critic of the Bush administration. Meehan will leave government life this summer to accept the post of chancellor at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Meehan graduated cum laude from UMass-Lowell in 1978, majoring in education and political science. He went on to earn his masters in public administration from Suffolk University in 1981 and his juris doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1986. Meehan was the First Assistant District Attorney of Middlesex County, supervising more than 150 people, including 80 prosecutors, and he established an innovative priority prosecution policy targeting hardened criminals. Meehan earned his reputation as a tough law enforcer as the Massachusetts deputy secretary of state for securities and corporations from 1986 to 1990. Meehan is married to Ellen T. Murphy, a vice president at Lawrence General Hospital. They are the parents of six-year-old Robert Francis Meehan and three-year-old Daniel Martin Meehan.
