Moriah class slates prom after-party

PORT HENRY Moriah Central School students will have fun and be safe at this years junior prom. For the first time the school will host an after-prom party, designed to be alcohol-free and keep students safe. Statistics show a high percentage of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents involving teens on prom nights. Were trying to start a tradition, explained Margot Roemischer, who is class adviser along with Tara Mero. This is a unique class and they want to do something different. This class is wonderful. Theyre 11th graders and Ive had these kids since seventh grade, she added. I want them to be safe and have fun. After proms kids often have alcohol; we want to provide an alternative. Roemischer said there havent been an problems associated with Moriah proms in the past, but giving teens a safe activities is always a good idea. The Moriah prom will be May 12, 7 p.m. to midnight at the school. The after-prom party will be midnight to 3 a.m. at the school. The party is actually being planned by a professional party company from Lake Placid and will include music, food, games such as jousting and sumo wrestling and an obstacle course. There will also be a cash cube where students can go inside to try can catch money blowing around. There will be raffles for iPods, gas cards and other items. We want to make it a big bang so itll attract kids and become a tradition in the future, Roemischer said. There are about 60 teens in the Moriah junior class and about 20 students are actively participating in planning the event. There was a little resistance at the beginning, but only because it was something new and different, Roemischer said. Now the kids are excited about it. The class has approached local agencies and businesses asking for support. The community and sponsor support has been wonderful, Roemischer said. Everyone is very supportive.
