MUMS students score big in "Math Counts" event

Middlebury Union Middle School students grabbed the spotlight at last weekends statewide Math Counts competition held at Vermont Technical College in East Randolph. Twelve teams of 6th through 8th grade students from all over Vermont competed individually and in teams in written and a fast-paced oral matches. Subjects included geometry, probability, statistics, algebra and factorials. A total of 99 students competed for the four top individual honors, who will go on to represent Vermont at the national competition in Forth Worth, Texas, May 10-13, along with the coach of the first-placed team, Diane Guertin of Middlebury Union Middle School. Team Winners: 1st Place: Middlebury Union Middle School coached by Diane Guertin. Team Members: Jarrod Ashley, Matt Burkins, Neil Guertin and Stuart Guertin 2nd Place: Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School coached by John Radimer. Team Members: Alex Piper, Flora Su, Kevin Wang, and Cody Yu 3rd Place: Shelburne Community School coached by Pam Cyr and David Dummit. Team Members: Krysta Dummit, Laura Dunphy, Peter Hauke and Mark Rowland 4th Place: Edmunds Middle School coached by Joan Landon. Team Members: Colin Gleich, Sachi Leith, Liam Murphy and David Porter Top Individual Winners: 1st: Neil Guertin of Middlebury Union Middle School 2nd: Kevin Wang of Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School 3rd: Stuart Guertin of Middlebury Union Middle School 4th: Jarrod Ashley of Middlebury Union Middle School Top 2 Countdown Winners 1st: Kevin Wang of Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School 2nd: Neil Guertin of Middlebury Union Middle School Honorable Mention trophies: 1st: Krysta Dummit of Shelburne Community School 2nd: Will McCormick of St. Francis Xavier The national and state organizers of the event were the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers.
