The 2007 Irishman of the Year: John Masella

As Killeen introduced the past recipients he stopped at Dr. Angelo LaMariana, who held the title in 1965. LaMariana, with his fiddle, and Jim McConley on piano, were already at the front of the room providing musical entertainment during the 49th annual St. Patricks Day Breakfast. LaMariana, now in his 90s, was asked to stand for recognition. I am standing, he joked. Killeen came back with I can tell you that this years Irishman of the Year is slightly taller than he is. True, John Masella, of OneWorkSource has a few inches on LaMariana! Masella, who was chairman of the last United Way campaign, was shocked to hear his name announced. Before he knew it he was whisked away to the back of the room where he was given the honorable green hat and Irishman of the Year banner and asked to lead the Cumberland Bay Barbershoppers back to the podium area. Masella led the vocal ensemble through a series of Irish favorites. They returned the favor by providing the background vocals as Masella serenaded his wife, Vicki, with You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.
