Michaela Bushey receives recognition as a vocalist

AU SABLE FORKS Michaela Bushey, daughter of Michael and Angela Bushey of Au Sable Forks, was one of six sopranos selected to perform in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble at the New York State School Music Associations (NYSSMA) 71st Annual Winter Conference All-State Concerts in Rochester, NY Dec. 2-3, 2006. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble was comprised of six students for each vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), a bass guitarist and a drummer. The vocal jazz ensemble had the privilege to open the Winter Conference singing the The Star Spangled Banner on Dec. 2, in The Kilbourn Hall, at The Eastman School of Music. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble sang six additional songs under the direction of Kim Nazarian. Nazarian, the guest conductor, is a magna cum laude graduate of Ithaca College, and is a founding member of the Grammy award-winning group New York Voices, formed in 1987. She has recorded numerous CDs and toured the world with this outstanding vocal quartet. This year, NYSSMA selected approximately 900 out of 6,400 students to perform in one of eight All-State performance groups. These select students were a group of students who successfully auditioned and earned a score of 98-100 on their NYSSMA solo evaluations. Michaela is a senior at Au Sable Valley Central School. She has sung in the Jazz Choir and the Concert Choir, directed by Steve Collier, for the last four years. This year, she is a vocalist and is one of the keyboard players in the Jazz Band, directed by Terri Saulsgiver. She also successfully auditioned for Conference All State Mixed Chorus last year, but chose to sing in the Jazz Ensemble. She has also sung in the Champlain Valley Oratorio Society for the last two years.
