Local man arrested after YMCA break-in

According to police the call came at approximately 5:30 a.m., from a YMCA employee reporting a broken window at their 17 Oak Street facility. When officers arrived they found what appeared to be blood and other evidence indicating that an intruder had entered and remained in the building for some time. Detectives from the department were called in to continue the investigation. As they processed the crime scene and collected several pieces of evidence, they found a wallet with identification belonging to Ryan J. Berney. They also found his address , which was 9 William Street, Plattsburgh. Officers found Berney, 20, in his apartment, with recent injuries to his face. During an interview Berney allegedly made admissions linking him to the YMCA incident. He was transported to CVPH for treatment and then taken to the Plattsburgh Police Department where he was arrested on the following charges: Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, a Class B Misdemeanor, and Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor. Berney was arraigned before Plattsburgh City Court Judge Penelope Clute where he was released on his own recognizance to return March 28. The investigation is continuing.
