PLATTSBURGH Kimberly Bouissey and her fifth-grade students have developed a nice relationship with local veterans from the Robert A. Lafountain DAV Post 179. Teamed up with Michelle Ouelette, coordinator of the Champlain Valley Family Centers Learn and Serve program, Bouisseys class set out to learn all they could about who and what veterans are. The friendship began during a wreath ceremony put on by the class to honor those who had served the country. Along with a fresh balsam wreath came names and contact information for each student so that the veterans could keep in contact. That they did. In fact the veterans have visited Bouisseys classroom a few times since then, and have even helped the students get motivated to learn their multiplication tables. The students achieved their goal and as a reward they got to invite their new friends to lunch - and ice cream. Bouissey made homemade chili. The students were delighted to help with setting tables, decorating and serving. Everybody helped with the sundae-building!
