Saranac Lake students enter state competition

SARANAC LAKE Saranac Lake High Schools LifeSmarts team was recently recognized for their participation in the national on-line consumer quiz, LifeSmarts, coordinated in New York State by the New York Credit Union Foundation (NYCUF). Saranac Lake High School is one of 12 top scoring teams that advanced to the New York State finals competition in Albany on March 6. The winner of the state title will then take part in the national LifeSmarts finals April 24 in Orlando, Fla. Students and teams qualify for the state finals by answering questions in an Internet quiz operated by the National Consumers League. LifeSmarts is a consumer challenge for high school students. It offers students of all backgrounds and abilities, in grades 9-12, an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of real-life marketplace issues in five key areas: personal finance; health and safety; environment; technology; and consumer rights and responsibilities. This year, students from 54 high schools from around the state participated in the LifeSmarts competition. Jody Carpenter, director of marketing for UFirst Federal Credit Union, which is sponsoring the Saranac Lake team, visited the school to present their students and coaches with a certificate of achievement from the NYCUF.
