Remembering a free spirit with bike ride

ELIZABETHTOWN While Americade was taking place in Lake George, several local motorcycle enthusiasts gathered to remember a friend.

Nikkis Run, a memorial ride for Nicole Nikki Ives, was held on Saturday, June 9. A group of about 40 gathered at the Stewarts Shop parking lot in Elizabethtown before taking a ride through Keene Valley, Jay, Keeseville and Willsboro.

Ives was killed June 24, 2006 in a motorcycle accident. Run coordinator Heidi Ives, Nikkis sister, said she hoped to make it an annual event.

Her perfect day would be a ride, said Heidi Ives. Its a memorial not just for my sister, but everyone who isnt here to go with us.

The Hawgs R-Us Club, an independent group of local riders, hosted the ride. The Raquette River Riders, a group from Tupper Lake, also participated. Riders were handed pale blue bandannas, which they wore or secured to the handles of their bikes.

The ride ended at Calgary Cemetery in Willsboro, where Ives is buried. Participants then enjoyed a gathering at the Willsboro Fish and Game Club.

Gordon Costin, president of the Hawgs R-Us, recalled Ives as a friendly, cheerful person who was a good friend to everyone.

Everyone here knew Nikki. She never picked sides she was a friend to all of us, said Costin.
