Panthers gain Final Four spot

Mary Zapolski added a two-run blast for the Panthers, while Marijane Ross had three hits, three RBI and scored three times.

Ticonderoga 18, Madrid-Waddington 1

Ticonderoga crushed Madrid-Waddington, 18-1, in the opening round of the state Class C softball tournament June 6.

Every Sentinel starter had at least two hits and capitalized on eight Madrid errors in rolling to the win. Ti scored three of more runs in each of five innings.

Cheryl Meserve had five hits, including a home run, for Ticonderoga. Casondra Collins added four base knocks.

Anna Besson, Saw Cawley, Laura Olcott, Jessie Kelly, Arielle Vilardo, Morgan Jordan and Julieann Mandy each had two hits for the winners.

Olcott was the winning pitcher, hurling a two-hitter and fanning 14.

The win advanced Ti to the regional finals against Hoosic Valley.

Hoosic Valley 1, Ticonderoga 0

Ticonderoga couldnt muster any offense as it fell to Hoosic Valley, 1-0, in the state Class C softball tournament June 7.

Hoosics Jen Mineau fired a two-hitter, striking out 14 batters and dominated the game.

Mineau scored the games only run in the second inning. She walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by Andrea Nielsen. Mineau also had her teams only other hit.

Laura Olcott was outstanding in defeat for Ti. She hurled a two-hitter and fanned eight. Cheryl Meserve had both Sentinel hits.

The loss ended Ticonderogas season with a 22-3 record.
