SARANAC Melissa Perry received an uplifting and valuable surprise on National Teacher's Day, May 8.
She and her 21 kindergartners had just returned to their classroom following a visit to the library when a group of unannounced visitors arrived. Saranac Elementary Principal Tamer, several teachers, and several representatives from Wal-Mart arrived to congratulate her for winning the local Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award. Perry did not even know she was being considered for the award!
The Wal-Mart representatives did not come empty- handed. They brought a huge cake, a bouquet of flowers, a teacher of the year polo shirt, a personalized certificate, a $100 gift card to purchase classroom supplies, and a $1,000 dollar grant for Saranac Elementary School.
Nicholas Pellerin exclaimed with excitement that his mother had written a letter to nominate Perry, and he was given the honor of presenting his teacher with the bouquet. Nominations were made during February and store and club associated chose the winner. Over 4,000 Wal- Mart stores honored teachers across the nation with this award.
The teachers in our area are superb, said Wal-Mart Manager Wendy Peterson. The selection process was not an easy one.
There are many who agree wholeheartedly with Wal- Marts final selection.
She is conscientious and extremely dedicated to the profession of teaching and is willing to go above and beyond for her students as well as for the building as a whole, commented Tamer.
She finds each student's strengths and helps build on that. I hope the world has more Mrs. Perrys in my son's future, Bonnie Pellerin wrote in her nomination letter. Melissa Perry in my eyes, my husband's eyes, and most importantly my son's eyes is THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR.
She always says nice things and makes me feel good about my work! said kindergartner Taryn Collins. I don't care if I ever get playtime because doing things with her is fun!
