NORTH CREEK Next Saturdays Race the Train road race to benefit Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars isnt just another run in the country.
Organizers have packaged several family activities around the road race with the goal of attracting families to the area for a full day of events rather than just a road race for runners.
Its very family friendly, said organizer Ann Arsenault. I think thats what sets us apart from other events.
That approach has turned the race that started humbly six years ago into an event that last year drew runners from 14 states and this year involves more than 100 local volunteers.
The first year we didnt have a clue if people would come. But it has really taken off, Arsenault said. The local involvement, thats amazing since we dont have that many local runners.
The race begins in North Creek around 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, when runners and spectators board the train at the North Creek Depot that carries them to the Riverside Station in Riparius. There the runners disembark and line up for the start of the race at 9 a.m. on the Riparius bridge.
Runners race 8.4 miles on a road that parallels the river back to North Creek as the train makes its return with spectators on board.
The racers say they like it because of the dirt road and the shaded canopy of trees, Arsenault said. Its the cool of the morning and that makes it attractive too.
But its the family nature of the event that makes it stand out, she added.
The train stops along the way for photo opportunities, Arsenault said. Then when the main race is over, theres a family fun run. Last year we had more than 75 participate in that. Its a lot of fun, especially for the kids.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Dollars for Scholars to help students at Johnsburg Central School.
