ELIZABETHTOWN The laboratory department at Elizabethtown Community Hospital has successfully completed a survey from The Joint Commission to continue its accreditation.
Every two years, the laboratory is subject to an unannounced visit by a surveyor. While inspecting the department, the surveyor looks at quality control, proficiency testing and the departments impact on patient care, like results being sent in a timely manner and followed up on appropriately.
More than 94 percent of tests are performed in-house and most results are sent to the physician the same day the patient visits the laboratory.
We try to make our services convenient for our patients. There is typically very little waiting time to have lab work done. Seasonal residents will also use the ECH laboratory for any routine lab testing they may need, and we fax the results directly to their physician, said Pat Thaxton, laboratory manager.
Seven licensed New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologists and two highly skilled and personable phlebotomists staff the laboratory. Outpatient hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. However, the department is staffed 24 hours per day during the week so that there is no waiting time for patients on the Inpatient Unit or coming to the Emergency Room. You do not need an appointment to come to the laboratory, only an order from your physician. For more information about the laboratory department at ECH, call 873-6377 or visit www.ech.org.
