Field hockey player travels to Europe to play

WARRENSBURG Abby Roth loves field hockey. She recently returned from Virginia Beach where she played on the winning team in the Regional Rumble Field Hockey Tournament through the USA Field Hockey Futures Program.

Our team won the whole tournament, Roth said. Its the first major tournament that New York has ever won. She said that Pennsylvania and New Jersey typically win since they are huge field hockey states. Her team was made up of 15 players from all over the state, and there were 32 teams competing in the tournament.

Roth, who is almost 15, said it was quite hot when she played.

It was 104 degrees every day, she said. But they gave us lots and lots of water buckets.

Future athletes participate in an elite level of training to improve their playing skills and develop a better understanding of the game.

On July 12, Roth took off for Europe, where she will play field hockey, practicing with English coaching staff and competing with top international teams.

I am so excited, Roth said before she left. I love field hockey, and in Europe, itll be all hockey, all the time.

After training in England, Roth will take the ferry to France and travel to Brugge, Belgium and the Dutch training camp where she will train and compete.

I cant wait to go to Europe, Roth said. Ive only been to Mexico and Canada before, and its really different over there.

Roth will return on July 24 and in September, she will be a sophomore at Warrensburg Junior/Senior High School.
