AVCS hires new athletic director

Munson is originally from Montana, and has experience coaching football, basketball and track on the secondary and junior college levels. This is his first job as an athletic director, although he interned for an athletic director while living in New Mexico.

He has lived in the area for about two years, earning his certification from New York State. He and his wife, Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sylvie Nelson, have a three-year-old child.

Munson holds a bachelors degree from the University of Montana Western, where he played college football. He earned a double major of biology/life science, and physical education/health. He earned his masters degree in education with an emphasis in administration from Viterbe University in Wisconsin.

Lopez, who retired officially on June 30, said she is looking forward to spending time with her three grandchildren, as well as being able to play more golf. Savage expressed his appreciation for Lopez's efforts, calling her the best athletic director he's ever worked with.

Karen Lopez was a tremendous asset to AVCS and she has forever left her mark on our students, schools and communities, said Savage. She has made AVCS a much better place and her dedication and commitment to the Red, White and Blue will forever be respected and appreciated.
