CLINTONVILLE There's a new man calling the shots in Au Sable Valley Central Schools Athletic Department.
Kurt Munson of Saranac Lake has been hired to fill the slot vacated by Karen Lopezs retirement as director of health, physical education and athletics. He was selected at the board of educations June 20 meeting, and started with a salary of $58,000 on July 1.
His experiences in all three areas of education was invaluable and he proved to be a well rounded candidate with a student centered focus that is essential to this position. We felt strongly that Kurt would be a great fit at AVCS and throughout the interview it became very obvious that his philosophy of education and athletics matched the districts quite closely, said Savage.
Munson was enthusiastic about starting the position. He said he was impressed by the current athletic program, and the school's facilities along with the supportive nature of the community towards its athletes.
I want to continue with the schools wellness initiative, build successful athletic program and streamline the PE curriculum, said Munson.
The position, Savage explained, was a challenging one since its always in the public eye, and has the responsibility of overseeing three important educational areas and making sure all children are provided with the opportunity to participate in athletics.
It is not a position that is for the faint of heart and in order to be successful requires a very special type of skill set. It is essential that the person be an excellent communicator, team-player and leader by example, said Savage.
Munson said health and wellness education is an important part of the curriculum. He cited current national trends in obesity in children as a concern.
We need to be able to educate the whole child, and find an opportunity not to fall into those categories, said Munson.
